An Indigenous Woman Is Going To Run For Mexico’s Presidency in 2018

Last week, the EZLN (a revolutionary leftist political and militant group often referred to as the Zapatistas) released a statement claiming they will choose an indigenous woman to run as an independent candidate for the forthcoming electoral process in 2018.
During the Fifth National Indigenous Congress, an agreement was established to form an “indigenous council lead by a woman that would speak for the CNI and the EZLN in the next elections.

“Our struggle is not for power”
According to Mexican Outlet Animal Político , this would be the first time in 22 years that the Zapatistas will be running for a position in public office. However, the details of their participation and registration in the electoral process –something they’ve always been hesitant about – have not been disclosed yet.
