The post has become increasingly ceremonial since British rule, but the sultan, considered a spiritual leader in the Muslim community in Nigeria, can still carry a lot of weight with Fulani and Hausa people from northern Nigeria.
Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III is the 20th sultan of Sokoto, titular ruler of Sokoto in northern Nigeria. Born in the year 1956 in Sokoto, he is the head of Jama’atu Nasril Islam and presidential-general of the Nigerian National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
As the sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar is the leader of the Qadiriyya sufi order which is known historically as the most important Muslim position in Nigeria. Sa’ad Abubukar is known as the 16th most influential Muslim in the world.


2. His Royal Highness Muhammed Sanusi Emir of Kano





Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was born in the year 1961 into the fulani torodbe (sullubawa) clan of Kano. Before emerging as emir on the 8th of June 2014, he was a banker and former governor of the central bank of Nigeria. He was a successful banker and ranking fulani nobleman. Mallam Sanusi is the grandson of Muhammadu Sanusi (the 11th fukani emir of kano). In 2011, he was listed in Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people.


3. His Royal Highness, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi Lii, Alaafin Oyo



Alaafin Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III was born in the year 1938. He is the traditional ruler of the state of Oyo. In 1990, he was appointed amir-ul-hajj by the then President Ibrahim Babangida in recognition of his dedication to the consolidation of Islam in Nigeria.


4. His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ooni of Ife





Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi was born in the year 1974 into the family of Prince Ropo and late Mrs Margaret Wuraola Ogunwusi. Before emerging the throne, he was a successful accountant and intelligent entrepreneur. The stylish first class king is a show-stopper and a high point of admiration where ever he is, he is also a peace promoter. In January 2016, Ooni Ogunwusi broke a 79 year-old antagonism between the thrones of Ife and Oyo by visiting the alafin.
